The Benefits of Spay & Neuter

A constant concern for those in the animal welfare community has been the ever-present overpopulation crisis. There are simply too many animals in shelters, and not enough homes. But spaying or neutering your pet is not just about shelter statistics. Studies have shown that altering your pet can lead to a variety of benefits. From overall living a longer and healthier life to preventing behavior problems.

The Pros of Altering Your Pet

  • No heat cycles. Female cats may yowl or pee in your house in order to attract mates while in heat. Stray dogs will be attracted to your home by the smell of an unaltered female dog.
  • Longer, healthier lives. Unaltered pets are more prone to a variety of cancers, including ovarian, mammary, uterine and testicular cancer. Studies have shown that spayed/neutered dogs live 1-3 years longer, while cats live 3-5 years longer.
  • Less desire to roam. When in heat, pets may wish to escape in order to find a mate. This can lead to injury due to vehicles, or fights with other animals.
  • Reduce unwanted behaviors. Spraying, marking, and aggressive behaviors are more common in unaltered pets. Early alter will prevent these behaviors from occurring.
  • No unwanted litters! There are already too many animals compared to the number of homes. Spaying your pet will prevent the expenses, time, and stress involved with an unplanned litter.

What Are My Options For Spay/Neuter?

You’re ready to make the decision to have your pet altered. But where do you start?

  • Private Veterinary Clinic. Your primary veterinarian can likely provide your spay/neuter service, but feel free to call around! Many offices will have different rates if affordability is a concern.
  • Pet Resource Center of KC. A nonprofit clinic that strives to provide affordable medical care to all pets. If finances are a concern, this is a good option to consider.
  • Spay/Neuter Collaborative. Every few months, local shelters and nonprofits come together to provide free spay/neuter services to our community. Keep an eye on your social media to see when our next clinic will be hosted!

Spay/Neuter can make a massive difference not only for your personal pet, but for the entire Kansas City community. We are always here to answer any questions you may have, and you can contact info@greatplainsspca.org for more information or assistance.
