Great Plains SPCA offers a comprehensive array of valuable benefits to support employee health, family, and way of life, including competitive compensation, time off, discounts, health benefits, financial planning and lots of puppy and kitten kisses! Following are offered to all employees who work 30 hours or more.
GPSPCA offers competitive pay and is the highest in the Kansas City area for front line animal shelter positions. Employees receive annual performance reviews with the opportunity for salary increases and financial bonuses.
GPSPCA offers a generous paid time off package which increases after just the first year of employment. In addition, we recognize nine company holidays when we are closed to the public: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Because the animals need care 365 days per year, you may be required to work on holidays and will be paid premium for the hours worked and get free lunch.

Medical, Dental, Vision
GPSPCA pays an average of 50% of the health insurance premium for medical, dental and vision for employees who work at least 30 hours per week. Employees can select from four health care plan options.
Mental Health Counseling
In addition to the behavioral coverage offered in the medical benefits, we offer a 100% employer paid mental health therapy program called MyStrenths. MyStrengths is a flexible and comprehensive digital counseling program with proven tools and dedicated support for stress, depression, sleep and more. This service provides sessions with both mental health therapists and psychiatrists.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
EAP offers immediate support and referral to the most appropriate resource to help employees and family manage everyday life issues such as emotional issues, relationship concerns, coping with a serious illness, substance dependence, childcare, financial, and more.
GPSPCA offers a 403(b) retirement plan to all employees to help support savings for later in life.
Life and AD&D Insurance
GPSPCA pays the full premium for group term life. Employees also have the option to purchase supplemental life insurance.
Disability insurance provides benefits that replace part of an employee’s lost income when they become unable to work due to a covered injury or illness.

Description: The Chief Operating Officer at Great Plains SPCA will lead the day-to-day operations of our best in class shelter. Leading a team of directors and managers, you will ensure excellent results in delivery, support, and alignment of the vision and strategy of the organization.
Pay Range: This position has a Salary range of $80,000 – $100,000 depending on experience.
Description: As our Major Gift Officer, you will design, develop, and implement our major gift program. You will be responsible for managing and cultivating relationships with existing major gift prospects, as well as identifying new prospects. An ability to empathize with donors and clearly communicate our organization’s mission is key. You will be expected to energize team members and persuade prospects.
Work Schedule: Hybrid work environment available following successful operations orientation. Position participates in necessary onsite and offsite meetings.
Pay Range: This position has a Salary range of $60,000 – $75,000 depending on depth of experience.
Description: Reporting to the Director of Philanthropy and Engagement (DPE), the Marketing Manager is responsible for the coordination and implementation of marketing, branding and communications for our mission-driven organization. This is a position that requires both strategic problem solving and hands-on marketing skills. This is an excellent opportunity to join a best in class, mission-driven service organization within the animal welfare industry.
Pay Range: This position is onsite, with a salary range of $50,000 – $65,000 depending on depth of experience.
Description: The Senior Pet Adoptions Advisor role is a results-focused position that ensures our pets find the right homes. Our matchmaking approach is centered on creating safe and lasting adoptions.
Pay Range: $19.23-$26.44 per hour depending on experience.
Description: The Animal Care Advocate is a full-time hourly position that provides all animals in Great Plains SPCA care with conscientious, compassionate care, meeting our animals’ physical and behavioral needs.
Pay Range: $15.00-$19.00 per hour depending on experience.
Description: This is a full-time position that works with Director of Facilities to support all facility activities and ensure the optimal environment for staff and animals. The Facilities Technician assists in maintaining and managing the buildings, grounds, security system, safety measures, equipment, and vendor relationships. The ideal candidate is highly driven, professional, and capable of managing their workload and prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced ever-changing environment. This is an excellent opportunity to join a mission-driven service organization within the animal welfare industry. The ideal candidate is someone who loves animals and has an interest in keeping their temporary living space safe, comfortable, and in tip top shape for both the animals and the staff who care for them.
Pay Range: $20-$25 per hour
Board of Directors Opportunities:
We are looking for diverse, passionate community leaders with a strong background in finance, development, fundraising and marketing who are willing to bring their experience to help us increase our brand awareness and financial growth. While day-to-day operations are led by GPSPCA’s Chief Executive Officer, the Board-CEO relationship is a partnership. The appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected to provide leadership, governance, and oversight. Here’s what you can expect as a member of our Board:
- Serving on our Fundraising committee and taking on special assignments (1-4 hours per month).
- Actively participate as Brand Advocate and Ambassador in GPSPCA’s fundraising efforts, events, and donor engagement meetings.
- Serving as a trusted adviser to the CEO as she develops and implements GPSPCA’s strategic plan.
- Approving GPSPCA’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions.
- Being informed of and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
- Reviewing outcomes and metrics for evaluating community impact.
- Reviewing agenda and supporting materials in preparation for quarterly board meetings.
- Contributing to the annual performance review of the CEO.
- Assisting the CEO and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting other Board members.
- Ensuring GPSPCA’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities GPSPCA serves.
