Partnering With Shelters To Make An Impact

Every shelter in the Kansas City area is feeling the pressure of pet overpopulation. With a distinct increase in lost and surrendered pets coupled with lower than ever adoptions, shelters must work together to create the best outcome for every animal in need. Great Plains SPCA transfers in as many animals as we can each month to assist other shelters with a lack of space or provide medical care to injured or sick pets. Below are just a few of those animals that shelters transferred to us in the past month.

Ellie – Adorable Dachshund With An Old Leg Injury

Ellie originally resided at KCK Animal Services with what they speculated to be a previous disk injury. Their staff wanted a second opinion on her health, and knew that our vets would take excellent care of Ellie. After further assessment of the damage, our Shelter Medicine Team determined that, though she may walk with a limp for the rest of her life, she is not currently in any pain. She will live a long and happy life with adopters who are understanding of her needs and able to provide future pain management as needed.

Not long after being made available for adoption, Ellie met the family that will provide all the love and care that she needs for years to come. Happy Tails, Ellie. 🐾

Barnes – Shy Pup Learns To Love

Barnes started his shelter journey at Kansas City Pet Project, nervous and unsure of what the world had to offer. With help from his doggy playmates at Great Plains SPCA, he learned that our staff and volunteers would treat him with nothing but love and kindness. Every day he got extra walks and 1:1 time, and it wasn’t long before his new family stopped by the shelter to meet him.

His name is now Biscuit, and he is adjusting wonderfully in his new forever home. Happy Tails, Biscuit. 🐾

Ginger – Pregnant Cat Gives Birth In A Loving Foster Home

Previously a Clinton Animal Shelter resident, Ginger arrived at Great Plains SPCA heavily pregnant and set to give birth at any time. She was immediately placed in a foster home where she could have a peaceful environment to have her babies, and shortly after, she welcomed four bundles of fur into the world.

Ginger is an amazing mother, and her kittens are thriving under the care of their foster. Once the kittens are finished nursing, momma Ginger will be spayed and made available for adoption. She is incredibly affectionate and attentive, and we think her kittens will follow her example as they grow big and strong.

Dude – Little Heeler With A Big Heart

This little dude made his way to us from the Eureka Animal Shelter, full of sass and personality. Dude had a habit of nipping at feet and displaying typical herding behaviors in his previous environment. But it turns out that Dude was just waiting for his forever family to be on his best behavior.

Dude is now a perfectly behaved gentleman. Housetrained, kennel-trained, and a delight at the dinner table. After a brief stop at a foster home to brush up on his skills, Dude made his way to the adoption floor and met his forever family. Happy Tails, Dude. 🐾

These are not the first and certainly won’t be the last of the animals we transfer to Great Plains SPCA. With the help of every shelter in the Kansas City Area, we can make a big impact and save as many lives as possible.
