Foster Heroes: How The Sanders’ Transformed 805 Lives

At Great Plains SPCA, we have the immense privilege of working alongside some truly remarkable individuals who are an integral part of our mission to save lives. Among them are Zeb and Christine Sanders, a couple who have opened their hearts and home to an astounding 805 foster animals since 2010. We asked Christine a few questions about how they got started and what drives them to continue being heroes for homeless pets.

A Passion for Fostering: 805 Lives and Counting

When asked about the number of foster pets they’ve had, Zeb and Christine answered with pride, “805!” No doubt, their remarkable dedication has left an inerasable mark on the lives of every animal that has passed through their home, offering each a loving place to decompress, be nursed back to health, or grow up until they are old enough to be adopted.

Their journey began when their daughter was just 9 years old. Zeb and Christine were eager to instill in her the values of empathy and helping others. Recognizing their shared love for animals, they decided that fostering was the perfect avenue to start this learning journey. As Christine put it, “We were just going to volunteer, but at the time, it was still Animal Haven, and they also needed fosters.” It was a single email about a pregnant black lab mix, Lucie, that tugged at their heartstrings, leading them to take the first step into fostering.

Despite not having a foster license or a designated foster room, the Sanders family was determined to help. Christine fondly recalls, “We didn’t have any idea what we were doing, but we wanted to help.” And thus, their journey with Great Plains SPCA began, a journey that has not wavered since.

The Joys of Fostering: Creating A Safe and Loving Space

When asked what they enjoy most about fostering, Christine’s response reflects the loving and caring space that they provide for their fosters. “I think the thing I enjoy most is helping scared dogs feel safe and loved,” she shared. It’s this transformation of fearful animals into confident, lovable pets that keeps them motivated to continue their vital work.

Fostering provides a unique opportunity to create a safe haven for animals who have faced various challenges. Zeb and Christine understand that no one, be it human or animal, is at their best when they’re nervous and scared. Their dedication to showing these animals love and safety allows their true personalities to shine through, greatly increasing their chances of finding forever homes.

Words of Wisdom for Future Foster Parents

For those considering fostering, Zeb and Christine offer some valuable advice. They recommend starting with something manageable to get used to caring for another animal and to gauge the family’s response. “We just jumped right in,” Christine admitted, “but I’m not sure that is a good beginning for everyone.” Nevertheless, their overarching message is clear and unwavering: “If you are considering becoming a foster—DO IT!”

Great Plains SPCA is immensely grateful for the dedication and support of the Sanders family. Every day we are inspired by their story, and it’s a reminder how even a small act of kindness can make a world of difference in the lives of animals in need.
