Hi I’m Dr. Michelle Taylor, Chief Veterinarian here at Great Plains SPCA. and Caleb and I are here to talk to you about pet poison prevention. March is Pet Poison Awareness Month, so we’re just going to go over some common tips and handy ideas to help prevent accidental poisoning of our pets.

For dogs, the top ten list includes: chocolate, mouse and rat poison, anti-inflammatory medications, xylitol, which is found in sugar-free gum and a lot of sugar-free foods, grapes and raisins, antidepressant medications, acetaminophen, vitamins, especially chewable flavored ones, prescription drugs, such as stimulants, and fertilizers and pesticides.

For the top ten in cats, we see lilies, spot on flea and tick medication meant for dogs, really it’s important that we don’t use dog products on our cats, household cleaners, antidepressant medication, essential oils, anti-inflammatory, medications mouse and rat poisons, stimulant medications, onions and garlic, and vitamin D overdose.

This is just an easy top ten list, there’s lots of things that could be considered exposure for your pets. So really just keeping things out of their reach is going to be easy practice for us. Just a simple reminder that if you are concerned that your pet may have been exposed to anything accidentally, call your veterinarian right away. The sooner that we can get them treated, the better off they’re going to be. Thank you for tuning in we appreciate your support for Great Plains SPCA and Caleb!
