Great Plains SPCA has taken an additional leadership role in the animal welfare community since the COVID-19 crisis reached the Kansas City area. Two weeks ago, through a grant from GreaterGood.org, we distributed 47,000 pounds of emergency pet food to more than 20 local shelters and rescues across 19 counties in Kansas and Missouri. Great Plains SPCA is leading local community outreach during the COVID-19 crisis through collaboration and amazing teamwork.
On March 17th, we moved to doing adoptions by appointment only. Since then we have adopted out more than 98 pets, including 35 cats and 64 dogs, placed 42 pets into foster homes and provided approximately 3,000 pounds of food from our Pet Food Pantry to 120 families and two “meals on wheels” organizations.
Today we are launching our community-wide “Sew-A-Thon” with a goal to make 250 cloth face masks for Animal Control Offices (ACOs) in the cities with whom we partner. ACOs will distribute the masks to residents or civilian staff in need in their communities. If you are interested in participating, please email volunteer@greatplainsspca.org.
