COVID-19 Update

Dear Supporters,

As we all know, these are truly unprecedented historic times, and we deeply appreciate your ongoing care and support for the people and animals of Great Plains SPCA.

We wanted to keep you updated on how we are managing our operations and care of our animals as together we maneuver through the impact of COVID-19.

Shelter Operations – As this is a rapidly evolving situation, all items outlined below are subject to change and most importantly we promise to keep you closely updated via email, our website and social media as the situation evolves. Our number one priority is to keep our staff, volunteers and animals safe and as such, effective 3/17 we will be closed to the public.

Animal Care – We have solid plans in place to ensure that there will be no disruption to the care of our animals. We have taken proactive steps to mitigate risk by enabling some staff to work remotely as well as rotate on-site support of key leadership and medical staff.

Adoptions To follow the social distancing practice that has been recommended, we will be facilitating pet adoptions by appointment only. Anyone interested in one of our animals should call 913-808-3335 or email adoptions@greatplainsspca.org. Effective 3/17, all walk-in traffic will be suspended and access to the shelter will be by appointment only.

Foster – We are continuing to expand our foster network to help provide additional care for our animals. If you interested in fostering any of our pets please reach out to foster@greatplainsspca.org

Risk to our pets – According to the World Health Organization, there is no evidence that companion animals have been infected or could spread coronavirus (COVID-19). https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019

Cleaning Processes – In addition to our regular cleaning we have increased our deep cleaning and our staff are following the CDC recommended preventative measures.

Volunteer hours – In line with the social distancing plan, we are focused on reducing the number of volunteers onsite at the shelter. If you have additional questions, please email: volunteer@greatplainsspca.org

Pet Food Pantry – If you have questions or need help, please call 913-808-2872 or email petfood.kc@gmail.com. Due to overwhelming demand, please allow up to 48 hours for a response.

Public Behavior Classes – These are mirroring shelter operations and we will be suspended until further notice. Please email behaviorteam@greatplainsspca.org if you need additional information.

HERO Team – Our HERO outreach team will continue their life saving work, helping the most vulnerable in our community. If you know of a pet in need, please email info@greatplainsspca.org

City Contracts – We will continue to work with our Contract City Animal Control Officers and will still accept strays and animal with medical issues. Our Admissions Team will continue to work daily to provide services to our Contracted Cities and citizens reclaiming animals.

Transfers and Owner Surrender Appointments – Due to a reduction in adoptions, all transfers are being postponed bar any animals who would suffer if transport fell through. Owner surrenders will be managed case by case and continue to be by appointment only and as our capacity allows.

In-kind Donations – Public drop off of donated items is suspended at this time, however, we are still accepting donations via our Amazon smile wish list: https://amzn.to/2Uaghoe. Commercial vendor deliveries continue as normal.

Mandated State/County Quarantine – We have dedicated staff who have volunteered to stay at the shelter should any government agency mandate a quarantine. This will ensure we are able to continue to care for our animals.

Media Inquiries – Please email media@greatplainsspca.org

Although these are difficult times, we know that together we can get through this and only be stronger because of it.

“Just as we develop our physical muscles through overcoming opposition – such as lifting weights – we develop our character muscles by overcoming challenges and adversity.” – Stephen Covey
