Alumni Zuma’s Progress

Zuma was abandoned in a backyard this July in the heat of summer along with two other dogs. A Good Samaritan brought the dogs to our attention, and they were brought to safety at Great Plains SPCA. Zuma was extremely matted, covered in fleas and ticks and had an old pelvic fracture that caused a slight limp. Zuma also needed dental extractions and was fostered by a staff member to recover and work on his confidence until he was able to find his forever home.

Enter Aubry, who began working from home in March due to COVID-19 and was looking for a companion when she found Zuma on our website and has loved him ever since! Check out what Aubry had to say about Zuma’s impact on her life since adopting.

“Zuma has become my world! I actually have a quote on my fridge that says ‘It’s Zuma’s world, you just live in it.’” Having a 24/7 companion wasn’t something I realized I needed until I had it. Zuma and I spend every day together. He’s the goofiest, sweetest, most curious yet independent dog you’ll ever meet. I can’t believe I’ve lived so many years without a dog, yet I can’t image living with any dog other than Zuma.”

Zuma has made much progress since being adopted as well! Here’s what Aubry had to say:

“Something Great Plains SPCA did that I cannot thank them enough for was being up front about Zuma having a previous pelvis fracture. Not only did this prepare me to become the owner of a dog with additional needs, it allowed me to find and work with a vet to address Zuma’s health. In fact, this led to Zuma being diagnosed with not only a previous pelvis fracture, but also a leg and paw fracture. I now work around Zuma’s old injury: we take shorter walks versus longer walks. I keep him warm with coats and jackets when it’s cold and he takes medicine and supplements to help. Adopting a dog with special needs isn’t scary when you’re prepared up front like Great Plains SPCA did for me. Zuma now walks almost his entire walk (four times a day) with little to no limping, which is a huge improvement! Zuma also has come out of his shell! He’s become independent and shown how incredibly smart he is.”

Aubry continues to support Great Plains SPCA and share updates with us on how Zuma is doing. Read on for more about her experience and why she advocates for adoption and encourages you to support Great Plains!

“’Home for the Holidays’ for Zuma and me means we get to share our story in hopes it inspires someone to open their heart and home to a dog or cat at Great Plains SPCA. I’ve never adopted an adult dog before or one with an injury, but I can tell you I’d do it again and again because of the love I get from Zuma. So many dogs and cats currently up for adoption, and future dogs and cats that will come to Great Plains SPCA will need loving homes, and I hope that Zuma inspires you to scroll the adoption pages and fall in love with a dog or cat who deserves the world.

What really made Great Plains SPCA stand out to me was their reassurance that when Zuma and I left the facility, they were still there to help me. If I had questions or concerns, they reassured me I could call and get assistance. They told me over and over, they wanted the adoption to be successful for Zuma AND myself. I am so grateful that the team thinks of the entire family. This is what you’re helping support when you support Great Plains SPCA.”

We are so grateful for adopters like Aubry who go above and beyond to show their support of our work and provide incredible homes for our shelter pets. Donate today to help us place more pets like Zuma into loving forever homes.
