Volunteer Spotlight: August

Please join us in congratulating our August Volunteers of the Month! Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization and our shelter pets are lucky to have amazing people like them advocating on their behalf every single day!

Independence: Mary Dobbins

Mary has been a dedicated volunteer at Great Plains SPCA Independence Campus for two years. In fact, her two year anniversary coincides with her nomination as August Volunteer of the Month. We can’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate Mary and all that she does for our feline friends! Mary first came to us as a visitor, looking to make a difference. Five months later, we were fortunate enough to gain Mary as a full-time, official volunteer!  Mary is a regular in the Cat Rooms, providing adoptable cats much needed enrichment and time outside of their kennels almost daily. More inspiring still, Mary regularly assists the staff in countless other ways, such as facilitating Meet & Greets and assisting families with their search for lost pets.

“I found a connection with the animals and people at Great Plains,” Mary said.  “In finding that connection, I found a place that I belonged”.

Thank you for all of your hard work, Mary! Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination!

Merriam: Sandra Rust and Diana Sapp

Sandra Rust and Diana Sapp began volunteering with Great Plains SPCA exactly one year ago this August. In a year, the pair have completed nearly 200 hours of combined service, a good portion of which has been spent in the laundry room.

“We really enjoy doing the wash, Sandra has learned all aspects of this responsibility and works hard” says Diana.

Regardless of the work load they may face with what seems to be never ending piles of laundry, Sandra and Diana can always be found smiling and are eager to help with whatever they can. Their favorite aspect of volunteering is time spent in the Cattery, often with a lap “full of warm kitties”.

On behalf of Great Plains SPCA, thank you for all that you do Sandra and Diana and congratulations on becoming our “Volunteer of the Month”!
