Dog Days of Summer

Presented by MO*KAN dockdogs

We’ll have a blast – one splash at a time!

  • Friday, August 23

  • Saturday, August 24

  • Sunday, August 25

We are hosting a weekend of competition and fun with professional and amateur dogs jumping into a pool of water, thanks to MO*KAN dockdogs! The Dog Days of Summer are upon us, and you don’t want to miss this weekend of guaranteed good times.

A huge pool with dock will be set up over the parking lot at our Independence Campus for three days. Professional teams throughout the Midwest will gather to compete for trophies and ribbons – and good fun. Dogs from the public are also welcome to join in the festivities!

Join us for the Dog Days of Summer!

  • Register your dog to jump. If you think your dog would love the chance to compete, take a leap of faith and sign them up! You can pre-register on their site, which closes August 19th at 10:45 a.m. But don’t worry,  you can register onsite for just $5 more per wave.

  • Bring your family, friends and/or dog to watch this fun show… Maybe you’ve seen the competitions on TV, but you’ve got to see them up close!

Big Air, Speed Retrieve, Extreme Vertical and Fun Jump

Big Air is a “long jump for dogs”. The dog, which may be placed anywhere on the 40’ dock, runs and jumps into the water after a throw toy. The distance is judged from the end of the dock to where the tail set of the dog breaks the water’s surface.

Speed Retrieve is a “timed event”. At the far end of the pool a bumper toy is suspended 2” above the water with a starting indicator light above it. The dog is then placed at the 20’ white starting mark on the dock. When the light turns green, the handler releases the dog, the time clock stops when the dog has pulled the toy from the Speed Retrieve basket.

Extreme Vertical is a “high jump for dogs”. The dogs starts off at the 20’ mark on the dock and jumps up to grab a bumper toy extended out from the end of the dock over the water. The starting height for Extreme Vertical is 4’6” and goes up in 2” increments as competition progresses.

Fun Jump is an opportunity to raise much needed funds for Great Plains SPCA. Dogs from the public and shelter dogs will get to dive into the water for a good cause – to help homeless dogs.

How to Participate

There are two ways to register for an event. You can either pre-register online through the dockdogs website or you can register onsite at the event. There is a discount for teams that pre-register online and it also guarantees you a spot in the waves you would like to enter. Competitor fees are as follows:

  • Big Air: $30 Onsite (Preregistration has ended)

  • Speed Retrieve: $30 Onsite (Preregistration has ended)

Final Prizing: They will only run a Speed Retrieve Wave and determine the final ribbons based on that wave. Ribbons will be awarded to the top six dogs.

A Few Simple Rules for the Day

  • All dogs at the event must be on a 4’ leash, 8’ away from other dogs at all times.

  • Anyone can bring their dog to an event to compete, either by pre-registration or registering onsite.

  • The dog must be at least 6 months old.

  • The handler must be at least 7 years old.

  • All dogs must willingly go in the water – no pushing, shoving or throwing the dog into the water.

  • Poop and scoop or cleanup is a mandatory.

  • “Poop Bag Raffle” – There will be a small fenced area with a barrel for dogs to go potty. Put a bag of poop in the barrel and you can go to the MO*KAN table to get a raffle ticket. The winning ticket will be pulled just before finals on Sunday. Winner will receive a $25 American Express gift card.

Benefiting Great Plains SPCA

  • There will be two “Fun Jumps” with proceeds directed to Great Plains SPCA

  • Raffle throughout the weekend

  • “Pluck a Duck” fundraiser – There will be a baby pool filled with water with rubber ducks floating. Each duck is numbered and every duck is a winner. For a buck, you can pluck a duck from the pool to win a prize.

  • MO*KAN dockdogs hosting this event at our new Independence shelter helps increase awareness of our new programs in the area. We are so grateful to this wonderful organization for choosing our needy pets to benefit from this event!
