     Spring showers bring May flowers… as well as puppies and kittens! This season we need to remember the importance of spaying and neutering our pets. Spaying and neutering is the sterilization of our companion animals. Spaying involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus, while neutering is the removal of the testes. There are many benefits to having your pet spayed or neutered such as improved health, better behaviors, and fighting pet overpopulation.
Health benefits for fixed female pets include the prevention of pyometra, which is a life threatening infection of the uterus, and greatly reducing the risk of mammary cancer. For our fixed male pets, we can eliminate the possibility of testicular cancer as well as significantly decrease the chance for prostatic disease.
You can also expect better behaviors from your altered pet. Intact animals often roam to find a mating partner; this can have devastating consequences as these pets can be involved in hit by car accidents. Altered pets have no desire to find a mating partner and instead focus their affection towards the family. Intact animals are also more likely to mark their territory with urine, often leading to smelly clean up duties for their owners.
Last but not least, by having your pets spayed and neutered you will play a role in fighting pet overpopulation. Millions of cats and dogs are euthanized each and every year due to unplanned litters. These litters can easily be prevented by having your pet fixed.

Hi there, my name is Dominic! I am a pretty fantastic guy, if I do say so myself. I am looking for a best friend. A person who will love me, appreciate me and spend lots of time with me. Could that person be you?

My perfect home is a quiet home, without young children and where someone is home with me most of the time. A home where I am allowed on the couch next to you and where I am allowed to sleep next to you in bed. In fact, sleeping next to my best friend is something I dream about!

I am a very special guy, who has a few special needs. I have allergies that make me pretty itchy and make my ears pretty red and tender, but luckily I take medicine that makes me feel a whole lot better. My front legs are shaped a little differently, so I need to take a joint supplement. Because of this, I am a little awkward on the stairs, but with the lights on, I can tackle them. It just takes me a little longer than most. I have a little cataract, but the only time it gives me any real trouble is in the dark. I have learned to work with what I have so you might not even notice. I also have this little thing called “separation anxiety.” Not in the extreme kind of way. No, my separation anxiety makes me want to be with you all the time! I want to sit next to you wherever you are! I can help you wash the dishes, make the bed and do the laundry! Those boring, mundane things you do every day? Well I want to be with you while you do them! I can make all of those boring things FUN! So really, my separation anxiety is a benefit to you!

I have been at the shelter for far too long now. But I still haven’t lost hope. I am told that sometimes the perfect home takes a while to find. Do you have room in your heart for a fantastic guy like me? Do you need someone loyal and loving to be with you always? I sure hope so because I have room in my heart for you and I would love to be your loyal best friend from now until forever. I’m patiently waiting here, so please come visit me. But please do it soon because I really want a home of my own. This place is pretty great, but hey, I dream of a bed of my own. All my love….Dominic

 On Wed, May 8, Jackson Galaxy, star of Animal Planet’s My Cat From Hell, will be in Kansas City for an author event sponsored by Rainy Day Books.

Prior to the event will be a special reception sponsored by Kansas City Cat Volunteers and benefiting six area shelters.

Please join them at 5 PM in the Main Auditorium at Unity Temple on the Plaza for a special presentation by guest Jackson Galaxy that will provide a deeper understanding of the way cats act the way they do.

This is followed by a reception with light refreshment (hors d’ouvres and wine) and an opportunity to meet Jackson personally. Attendees will receive an autographed softcover of Jackson’s book Cat Daddy ($15.95 value) and are then invited to attend the Rainy Day Books presentation upstairs at 7:00 PM.

Tickets can be purchased at  www.rainydaybooks.com/CatDaddy, and are $50.00 per person. All proceeds from ticket sales benefit Spay Neuter Kansas City, Great Plains SPCA, Wayside Waifs, HELP Humane, Kansas City Pet Project and the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.
