About the Camp
Location: Merriam Pet Adoption Center at 5424 Antioch Drive, Merriam, KS – not the Independence facility
Young campers will learn about the pets in our care at Great Plains SPCA as well as other members of the animal kingdom, what their needs are, and how to be HEROES for them. Campers will discuss: Who are the animals in our community? What does it mean to be a HERO for Pets? What do animals need to feel safe and happy? Why should we be HEROES for Pets?
Topics include safety around animals, animal welfare issues, how youth can make a difference, relationships animals have with us and each other, animal careers and more. Projects include making toys and treats for shelter pets or pets at home, making animal-themed art pieces, crafts, interactive games, performance and more. Curriculum emphasizes kindness, respect, responsibility, decision-making as well as movement, play, cooperation, problem-solving, reading and writing. A culminating reception for parents, family, and friends to view the work of our Young HEROES – campers receive Young HEROES certificate.
We’ll have visits from Lakeside Nature Center and the KC Zoo Mobile!
Our summer camps are currently full. We will continuing the summer camps next year so stay tuned for next years registration.
