Featured Pet Dru

By There are no tags 0 comments

I am at the Great Plains Merriam Location! Come meet me today! My name is Dru! I have lots to tell you about me. First off, I have a wonderful two legged best friend named Barb. We go together like peanut butter and jelly. I’m the peanut butter and Barb is the jelly because I love love love peanut butter. Barb is the bun to my hot dog because I love love love turkey hot dogs – you get the idea. We are tight. She calls me a treasure and says I deserve a family who will honor, love and respect my presence in their lives. Is that cool or what? So, you ask why Barb is absolutely in love with me. Let me count the ways with you. 1) I love to give kisses. 2) I love to just lie in the grass and watch the world pass by after I have been played with or gone on a long walk 3) I love squeaky stuffed toys 4) I love attention 5) I am extremely intelligent 6) I love playing games that use my mind 7) I am willing to learn new things 8) I love to bury things in a pile of blankets, in a box, wherever 9) I love belly rubs 10)I entertain myself by playing with a tennis ball or stuffed toy I met Barb at another shelter where she was a volunteer and we just clicked. I wasn’t too thrilled about being homeless and was very sad. Barb and I met and we both fell in love with one another. Barb would come to visit me every day and I always looked forward to her visits. The other shelter was becoming too crowded so Barb made arrangements for me to come to Great Plains SPCA and I now have my very own suite (you must come visit me – suite life is sweet!). The best part is Barb still visits me every day. I am an active, full of energy type of dog and need daily exercise. No one would ever describe me as being a couch potato. I just want to run and play. Barb told me I needed to learn some doggie manners. I didn’t know what she was talking about but I soon found out. Dogs are not to pull when being walked on a leash (wow – that is hard because there is so much I want to check out). I am still learning and now I am walked with a Haltie Halter and doing so much better. I even attended a 6 week training class. Remember, I told you I love to run and play? That is a good thing but I love it a bit too much that a chain link fence doesn’t stop me from running – I just climb it to keep on running – call me Forest Gump. Silly me. Therefore, my forever family would either have to have a high wood fence that I can’t climb or be able to take me on lots of walks. I don’t want to get lost ever again. I love using my brain and would enjoy taking more doggie classes with you. I simply absorb attention and would prefer to be the only four legged pet. The way I see it; more attention for me. So, if you are looking for a high energy, sweet, strong, fun, intelligent dog companion – look no further. As I said before, suite life is sweet but nothing would be sweeter than a home and family of my own. Please come for me soon….all my love….Dru

Lost Pet Returned

By There are no tags 0 comments

poppy2Stephanie’s dog went missing a little over a month ago, possibly stolen.  Last week the dog was brought here by animal control as a stray.  No owner came, so we processed her medically. She saw our posting on KC Pet Connect that we had this dog here and she immediately recognized her furbaby, who is 10 years old and has been with this family her whole life. Stephanie and her kids came to the Lost Pet Center, verified that it was indeed their beloved Penny, and re-adopted her.  They are all very happy to have their little girl back!

Featured Pet Hank Williams

Young, energetic, handsome, sweet, timid until I get to know you – hi there, I’m Hank, and I’m not even one year old yet. I’m going to be a good size boy when I finish growing up. I’ll be a fine, upstanding young man who will be a loyal and devoted friend to you. I think they call me a Size Large at the animal shelter. I’m not super sized or anything, but I’m definitely taller and stronger than a lot of other dogs. I’m also a dark colored lad. Black coat with just a hint of brown in it. I’ve got the most inquisitive eyes and face. I watch everything and everybody. Sometimes people describe my people watching as an uncertainty. I look at people and other dogs and wonder sometimes if everything is ok. Will they be nice to me? Or do I have to worry about something bad happening if someone new starts to approach me. I just like to keep a watchful eye – just to make certain that the world is safe.

I was brought to the shelter originally when my owner abandoned me and my siblings. Thank goodness for a kind and loving next door neighbor. She found us and brought us to the shelter. She couldn’t keep all of us at her house – we were four bouncy, silly, crazy puppies. Yup, just puppies. We were, I guess, easily forgotten by our owner. It was sad really, but we didn’t know. We were young, and we all loved each other, and we just wanted to play and have fun. All of us were individually adopted out to different homes, and while I miss my brother and sisters, we all have to grow up and leave home and start new lives on our own, right?

I tried to start a new life with a new family, and I think for a long while things were going really well. I felt safe and secure, and my family loved me. But as time went on and as life can happen sometimes, it just didn’t work out. I started getting into scuffles with the new dogs in my adoptive family. My parents really couldn’t figure out what was going on and why we weren’t getting along any longer. They just knew it wasn’t going to work, so they brought me back to GPSPCA.

And I’ve been at the shelter ever since. No one really asks to meet me. I don’t know why I’m the forgotten one here. I watch some of my pals in their kennels. Some of my neighbors on Yellow Row at the Adoption Center are real talkers. They are always asking for room service, you know, extra food, a rawhide or two, a peanut butter kong. They can never get enough. Kennel staff come running when they bark, and they take care of their every need. Other dogs chew up their soft toys or knock over their water bowls and get kinda rambunctious in their kennels. I don’t do that. I see how they get attention and everyone notices them, but that’s just not me. And I think that is taking unfair advantage of the staff. It’s better to just be quiet and kinda go unnoticed. I don’t really need much at all. I am quiet in my kennel, and I just sorta look at people going by, usually questioningly like ‘why are you here’ or ‘do you want to take me out’? When they don’t look my way, I just go back to lying quietly, daydreaming of the moment when someone wants to meet me, when someone thinks I’m special enough to take home. I keep getting told this will happen one day for me and all the rest of the dogs here, but it just seems like such a long, long wait.

My volunteer friends here take me out all the time. They realize I’m still a young pup – eager to learn and oh so happy when I receive praise and love. I currently know ‘sit’, ‘down’, and I can even do a ‘shake’. I love to play with toys of all kinds, too. Stuffed ones, squeaky ones, frisbees, kongs, and I love my treats and my rawhide chews. I don’t demand these things. I just like my time to play, and I like my time with people. It can be hard here cuz I can develop a good friendship with someone, but I don’t get to see them every day. I maybe start to get a little attached to someone wonderful, and then they move out of town or are too busy with their lives to keep coming to see me. The snowstorms were really hard because it seemed like we didn’t get to see many people at all during those days. It was lonely at the shelter, but, the nice thing is, I think that spring has almost sprung! I’m hoping that with the sunshine and lots of people out and about that my someone who is meant to have me will notice me and pick me to meet.

Are you looking for a handsome boy to love? Do you want a dog rather than a puppy, but you still want a young dog that you can grow old with? I’m active, playful, good on leash, and a loving boy who just needs a second chance at life. Please come to GPSPCA as soon as you can to give me that chance. I will be waiting.

Love from Hank

Lily

By There are no tags 0 comments

lilyI am at the Great Plains Merriam Location! Come meet me today!
Hi there, my name is Lily or as some of my friends affectionately call me, “Lily Pad”. I am one sweetheart of a little gal, that loves to play and give kisses to everyone I meet. I am an active little girl and would love to have some kids to play with in my new family or a family that would be willing to play with me or take me for walks.

I love my walks and do very well on them. I love to explore and sniff out all the great smells here at the shelter! Since I am just a little bit of a girl, I am quite easy to walk. I also love to play tug with my toys and chase the balls. I also get along great with other little dogs my size and love to roll around on the floor with them and tug on toys with them. I was lucky enough to get to go on an overnighter with a friend of mine from the shelter during the snowstorm, and she had 3 other dogs. We had the best time, playing tug with toys and chasing after each other. If you have another furry friend at home, please bring them in to meet me to make sure they are willing to share their home and family with me.

If you are looking for a cute, friendly, little bundle of sweetness, look no further than Great Plains SPCA! I will be waiting for you……All my love…Lily
